Administrative MessageOctober 26, 2006 To: UCSC Community From: Acting Chancellor Blumenthal Re: Staff member dies earlier this weekIt is with great sadness that I write to inform you that one of our staff members, Herman "Jay" Johnson, died earlier this week at Dominican Hospital following an apparent heart attack. Jay, a community safety supervisor, collapsed while on evening duty early Tuesday at Colleges Nine and Ten. Jay worked on campus for 14 years, first as a relief proctor at both Oakes College and the Village before accepting a position as proctor supervisor for Colleges Nine and Ten around the time of their opening; Jay then joined the campus's Community Safety Program when it was launched in 2004. He also served on a number of committees and work groups over the years and worked closely with students and staff throughout the campus. Jay's survivors include his wife, Carmen, and a large extended family. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, October 29, that is open to the public. The service will take place at Mehl's Chapel at 222 East Lake Ave in Watsonville. Jay's colleagues in our Colleges and University Housing division are also planning a campus memorial at some future time. Please join me in extending heartfelt condolences to Jay's wife, other family members, and to his many friends.
