Re: Constitution Day 2006

Dear Campus Student Community,

Welcome to the Fall 2006 term! As our academic year gets underway, I want to inform you about a new federal law that was enacted last year. It requires that all schools receiving federal funds hold an educational program on the United States Constitution every year on Constitution Day, September 17, the anniversary of the signing of our country's founding document. This year, because September 17 falls on a Sunday, Constitution Day will be observed nationally on Monday, September 18.

Since our course schedule begins after September 18, I want to invite you to discover some of the interesting and informative materials about the Constitution that are available on-line through the following University of California web site:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/constitutionday/

Please take a few moments to review the University's Constitution Day website.

In a survey released by the National Constitution Center, evidence of a lack of constitutional knowledge is quite apparent. More students have greater knowledge of pop culture versus the United States Constitution.

I am confident that you, as a UCSC student, are familiar with our nation's Constitution. I want to encourage you to further your knowledge about its content and the importance of this document to our country and our way of life, particularly during these times.

Have a wonderful and productive year!

Sincerely,

George Blumenthal
Acting Chancellor
