Re: Appointment of University Librarian

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Virginia Steel, who has served very effectively in library leadership roles at three research universities, has accepted our offer to become University Librarian at UC Santa Cruz. Her appointment will take effect on October 1.

Since 2001, Virginia has served as Director of Libraries at Washington State University in Pullman. In that capacity, she has overseen the activities of six libraries on the Pullman campus and a budget of $11 million. She also coordinated library services across all four WSU campuses.

At Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1997 to 2001, Virginia served as Associate Director for Public Services, overseeing 125 staff and the operations and facilities of 14 branch libraries and departments with a budget of $7 million.

From 1988 to 1997, she served in several positions at UC San Diego. One of them was as head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Library, managing UCSD's largest branch with collections of 1.2 million volumes, a budget of $4 million, and 60 staff. During her time at UCSD, Virginia also served as the head of the Access Services Department and as Acting Assistant University Librarian for Public Services.

While I am extremely excited about the appointment of Virginia Steel, I am also very grateful for the tremendous service that Robert White has provided as Interim University Librarian at UCSC for the past two years. Bob and the entire library staff are to be commended for ensuring that one of the campus's most important assets--its libraries and their holdings--was so carefully stewarded after the retirement of longtime University Librarian Allan Dyson. Their work moving the library expansion project forward during this period has also been of utmost importance to the campus's future well-being.

I would also like to thank Senior Adviser to the Chancellor Michael Cowan, who served as Chair of the Search Committee, and the many other individuals in and out of the library who also served with such distinction on the committee.

Again, please join me in welcoming Virginia Steel to UC Santa Cruz on October 1.
