Re: Update of Phi Beta Kappa Membership Roster

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to ask for your assistance in updating our roster of faculty members who are members of Phi Beta Kappa.

Whatever the college or university at which they were originally elected to Phi Beta Kappa, all such UCSC faculty automatically become members of this campus's PBK chapter (Upsilon of California). Such membership carries no obligations, but members are invited to participate in occasional activities sponsored by the chapter. Before the end of the fall quarter, for example, the chapter will be sponsoring an informal (and well-catered) reception for members.

In terms of the annual selection process for new undergraduate PBK members, this chapter is one of the most rigorous in the country. Only about five or six percent of our seniors presently meet the standards this chapter has set for membership. That selection process thus contributes to this campus's reputation for academic excellence. It is also helpful for our reputation to show the national organization that a substantial number of our faculty are PBK members.

So, if you are a member of Phi Beta Kappa, I'd very much appreciate your taking one minute to send an email to the chapter's secretary, Dianne Wright (dwright@ucsc.edu), with the following two pieces of information:

*The school at which you were elected to PBK;
*The year you were elected (if you can remember).

Feel free to keep the format of your reply simple. Thus: "University of Michigan, 1987." If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dianne Wright by email or phone (459-5386).

Thanks very much for your help. We'll be sending you shortly an announcement of our fall reception. I'll look forward to seeing you then.

Sincerely,

Michael Cowan
