Administrative Message September 24, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Ilse Kolbus, Director, Physical Plant Re: Physical Plant Services – Academic Year 2004-2005Physical Plant remains committed to providing safe and efficient facilities to support the campus mission of teaching, research, and public service. As with other service units on campus, we’re also faced with an interesting set of challenges in 2004-2005, including: resource cutbacks; the rising cost of supplies, equipment, contracts and utilities; and the elimination of deferred maintenance, bond, and other state funding. As you are aware, the latter of these challenges translates into an inability to replace or upgrade significant building and utility systems. To meet these challenges, this unit will rely heavily upon a dedicated staff that consistently brainstorms innovative approaches to repair, "patch" and generally maintain campus operations. Despite these efforts, it remains that we're being asked to do more with less, a consequence of which might be a noticeable decrease in the level of service provided. You might also experience delays in response to non-urgent repairs. Requests for services considered "cosmetic" would receive less attention than in the past. Throughout, we ask for your patience and appreciate your support as we adjust operations to the realities of our times. For academic year 2004-2005, services will be prioritized as follows: 1. Emergency (response to system failure) Priorities within Physical Plant subunits are: * Building and Utility Services: keep campus utility systems operational, maintain energy-efficient building systems. Please be aware that the cost of campus utilities is growing. For the first time, utility costs have exceeded funds provided to pay our bills. Physical Plant will continue to operate the campus efficiently and to implement conservation measures; however, individual and unit conservation efforts are also required at all levels. Please go to our website at http://ucscplant.ucsc.edu and click on "Utilities Management" for valuable information and tips. Again, we appreciate your support throughout these challenging times. If you have concerns, you are welcome to contact me directly at 9-2660, or Customer Service Manager Ron Davis, at 9-3298.
