Administrative Message September 16, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Larry Merkley, Vice Provost, Information Technology Re: Appointment of ITS Director, Customer Relationship ManagementI am very pleased to announce the appointment of William D. (Bill) Hyder to the position of Director, Customer Relationship Management in the division of Information Technology Services (ITS), effective immediately. Bill will retain his position as Assistant Chancellor, but will commit one-quarter of his time to join the new senior management team of ITS. In that capacity, he will help our division support UC Santa Cruz's transition of IT services to a consolidated, customer-focused, service-based model. Bill brings to this position a unique and valuable set of skills. As Assistant Chancellor under Acting Chancellor Martin M. Chemers, Bill has wide knowledge of all aspects of campus administration and operations, with emphasis on the campus budget, business and information technology transformations, Academic Senate relations, and space and facilities development. The combination of administrative skills and Bill's relationship with the academic departments on campus will be an important component of establishing a positive and effective customer relationship management system. Bill's former position as computing director and then assistant dean for systems and operations in the Social Sciences Division also reinforces his ability to lead this new IT initiative. Prior to moving to Santa Cruz, Bill helped develop and manage the Social Sciences Computing Facility at UC Santa Barbara. He developed services in response to faculty expressions of need and through an independent analysis of need based on observations of faculty research and teaching activities. Bill brought 20 years of experience with academic IT services to the IT Transformation Program through all phases of development. He understands the reasons for moving to a new customer-focused model and supports the values and culture of the IT organization. I want to express my appreciation to Acting Chancellor Chemers for giving Bill the opportunity to add this new leadership role to his many existing responsibilities.
