Re: Chancellor's Message

Dear Campus Colleagues:

As we ended the spring quarter, I enjoyed participating in several commencements and graduation celebrations. If you also attended one or more of them, you know how wonderful it is to share the pride and happiness of our graduates and their families. Marking our students' achievements is a reminder of the meaningful work we do to support their success, and I invite each of you to share in the sense of accomplishment that commencement brings.

Now that the academic year is behind us, I thank each of you for your dedicated effort over the past months. Since my arrival on February 14, it has been my pleasure to meet many of you and to engage with you in a variety of activities. I summarized my campus and community visits and other activities and provided an overview of emerging campus priorities in remarks to the Academic Senate on May 20. Those comments are posted at chancellor.ucsc.edu/speeches/05-20-05_senate.asp.

Over the summer and when the new academic year begins in September, we will continue to address our many exciting challenges and opportunities. I pinpoint several emerging priorities in those remarks to the Senate, and I encourage your feedback.

Among the autumn's highlights will be a series of activities in lieu of a formal inauguration ceremony. Instead of investing resources in ceremony, we will focus on advancing our academic priorities and on supporting our students through the annual Scholarships Benefit Dinner. The goal of the investiture period is to create an opportunity to celebrate UC Santa Cruz, advance diversity and excellence, support our students, engage our community partners, and stimulate and herald our future accomplishments. You will find more information at investiture.ucsc.edu. This site will be updated intermittently as details are finalized.

Please plan now to participate in the symposium on November 3, attend my inaugural address and investiture by President Dynes on November 4, and support the Scholarships Benefit Dinner on November 5.

With my best wishes to each of you for a pleasant summer, full of rest and renewal,

Denice D. Denton
Chancellor
