Administrative Message April 18, 2005 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor Denice D. Denton Re: Tent University -- Message from Chancellor DentonI am writing to provide an update of the discussions about the proposed Tent University Santa Cruz (TUSC). We welcome the free exchange of ideas and the kind of open dialogue that should characterize a great university. The traditions of this campus proudly demonstrate a dedication to these values, and I am personally committed to them as well. Over the last week, I have met with SUA and GSA leadership, with Academic Senate leadership, the provosts, deans, and other campus leaders to discuss the complex issues surrounding TUSC. In addition, for approximately the past 10 days, Student Affairs staff have engaged with organizers of TUSC. Their intent has been to ensure an effective event that supports the goals of the students. They have offered numerous ideas that allow for alternative educational venues during daytime hours, when the campus is open to the public generally. At the same time, the very openness of this event - to which invitations have been extended broadly through flyers and broadcast media - poses potential problems. UC Santa Cruz has a longstanding policy of limited access to campus after 8 p.m., in order to ensure campus safety. We continue to discuss the event with student participants. I met this morning with two TUSC students to learn more about their goals and priorities. As of early this afternoon, staff and faculty are joining students convening at the campus entrance to discuss plans for the remainder of the week. Their goal is to achieve consensus on ways that the educational and cultural events planned by the students may take place. I want to thank the students, staff and faculty who are engaged in meaningful dialogue and continue to work toward a successful TUSC event. Cordially, Denice D. Denton
