Administrative Message

April 13, 2005

To: Campus Staff and Faculty

From: Denice D. Denton, Chancellor

Re: Message on Strike from Chancellor Denton

As we anticipate a labor strike of union workers tomorrow (April 14), I call upon all members of our wider campus community who choose to participate in the strike activities to conduct themselves in a peaceful, respectful and orderly manner. Only such an approach will serve the ultimate best interests of students and employees alike.

The campus intends to hold classes as scheduled with department chairs and to maintain basic operations as much as possible during the strike. A dedicated web site will provide administrative messages and details about internal shuttle service, food service, and child care operations.

In addition, 459-INFO will be activated as of 6 a.m. on April 14, and KZSC 88.1 FM radio will provide traffic updates and other information.

The health and safety of each individual on campus is a priority. UC Santa Cruz is aware of certain non-university web sites that are promoting destructive and illegal activities. The campus has hired extra security and has appointed response teams to monitor activities at the picket line and on campus.

If behaviors escalate to the point where the safety of our community is compromised, the University will take appropriate measures. Vandalism and injuries such as those experienced during two demonstrations last week will not be tolerated.

Although we accept that a strike normally results in some delays and disruption in routine service, I urge everyone to honor our shared Principles of Community. They demand civil discourse and respectful attention to differing perspectives.

Thank you in advance for your support and cooperation in ensuring a peaceful demonstration on Thursday.
