November 26, 2003 To: Campus Community From: Tom Vani, Vice Chancellor, Business and Administrative Services Re: TA Strike Aimed at Disrupting Finals and the Close of the QuarterThe University is currently engaged in negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW) for a contract covering some UC academic student employees (TAs). The current contract with the UAW expired on September 30. The parties have been actively engaged in negotiations at both the local and systemwide levels and most recently participated in pre-impasse mediation sessions on November 13 and 19. While the University continues to negotiate in good faith, the union has chosen to attempt to organize a strike commencing on or about the first of December. All employees are expected to come to work as usual during such a walkout. Offices will be kept open, classes will be taught, and the campus will provide essential services. While plans have been made to alleviate disruption of campus services during the strike, some inconveniences such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries may be experienced. Picket lines will likely occur at the Main Entrance and West Entrance to the campus. TAPS will operate all available campus transit vehicles to accommodate anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa Cruz Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. As in the past, should the Metro buses refuse to travel onto campus, they will load and unload passengers at transit stops adjacent to the Main Entrance on Bay and High Street, and passengers will walk onto the campus to board Day Shuttles. All faculty, staff, academic and student employees are expected to meet their normal obligations to the University. Those who do not will not be paid unless prior approval for a legitimate absence has been granted. Those who call in sick during any walkout may be required to provide documentation from a health care provider to receive approval for the absence. The UCOP web site has the most complete information regarding ongoing negotiations: The campus Public Information Office (459-2495) will handle all inquiries from the media. If you have any questions, please contact the campus Labor Relations Office at 459-2017. Sincerely, Thomas Vani cc: Principal Officer
