October 31, 2003 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: The Southern California firesTo some members of the campus community, the fires that have devastated large areas of Southern California this week have been more than shocking images and stories--they have been damaging or threatening to the lives, homes, and neighborhoods of their family members or friends. The Registrar's Office indicates that 3,600 of our students come from the four most affected counties: Los Angeles, San Bernardino, San Diego, and Ventura. Campus offices, including those in our 10 colleges, have been working to identify, reach out to, and provide services to students, staff, or faculty who may be directly affected by this tragedy. Campus aid that's been established includes the following: - Students who are directly affected can drop in at the Counseling and Psychological Services Office in the Student Health Center weekdays from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m. - "Debriefing" groups are also being developed, and an announcement about times, dates, and locations will be available soon. Debriefings are structured meetings to allow people to talk about how a traumatic event has affected them. - In addition, anyone who is simply concerned about the emotional effect these fires are having on a student or employee is encouraged to call Counseling and Psychological Services at ext. 9-2628. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the work of three members of UCSC's Fire Department who, along with a UCSC fire truck, were dispatched to one of the largest fires, the "Cedar" in San Diego County. The three, who left campus late Tuesday night for what could be a seven-day shift, are Captain Don Brookes, Engineer Britten Miles, and Firefighter Coleen Canright-Ulrich. Please join me in providing comfort, understanding, and best wishes to all of those personally affected by this tragedy.
