Re: Message from VC Tom Vani: Potential TA Strike on Friday 3, October 2003

As you may know, the University is currently engaged in negotiations with United Auto Workers for a contract covering some UC academic student employees (TAs). UC’s current contract with the UAW expired on September 30 at midnight. The parties bargained non-stop at a systemwide table from Sunday, September 28 through the expiration of the agreement. While the University remains hopeful that an agreement will be reached, the union has given some preliminary indication about a possible strike on Friday October 3. In the event of a strike, all employees are expected to come to work. Offices will be kept open, classes will be taught, and the campus will provide essential services.

While we are making plans to alleviate disruption of campus services during a strike, we could experience some inconveniences such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. During a strike, we expect picket lines to be in place at the Main Entrance and West Entrance to campus. TAPS will operate all available campus transit vehicles to accommodate anticipated demand for shuttle services should the Santa Cruz Metro (SCMTD) buses refuse to travel onto campus. As in the past, all Metro buses will load and unload passengers at transit stops adjacent to the Main Entrance on Bay and High Streets, and passengers will walk onto the campus to board Day Shuttles.

All faculty, staff, academic and student employees are expected to meet their normal obligations to the University in the event of a strike. Those who do not, will not be paid unless prior approval for a legitimate absence has been granted. Those who call in sick on the day of a strike may be required to provide documentation from a health care provider to receive approval for the absence.

The UCOP web site has the most complete information regarding ongoing negotiations: http://atyourservice.ucop.edu/employees/policies/labor_relations/index.html. The campus Public Information Office (459-2495) will handle all inquiries from the media.

If you have any questions, please contact the campus Labor Relations Office at 459-2017.

Sincerely,
Thomas Vani
