Re: Potential teaching assistants walk out

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to alert you to a potential walk out on our campus on Friday, October 3, and to convey my expectations for the continuation of critical functions during this event.

UC's current contract with the United Auto Workers for our Teaching Assistants (ASE's) expired Tuesday night, September 30. The parties began an intensive round of negotiations on Sunday, September 28, which ran non-stop through Tuesday night's contract expiration. While UC remains hopeful that an agreement will be reached, the union has made some preliminary gestures about a possible strike. In the event of a strike, the campus will experience some inconveniences, such as reduced bus service and delayed deliveries. However, all faculty and staff are expected to come to work and to meet their obligations. Offices will be kept open, classes will be taught, and the campus will provide normal or equivalent services.

Should a strike occur, I ask that you honor your commitment to our academic and research missions and to our students as the parties work toward agreement. I am hopeful that the University and the union will soon reach agreement on the issues outstanding between them. Information about these and other negotiations between the University and its employees' unions can be found at:

As we address the challenges of these times, I ask that we all be mindful of the UCSC Principles of Community.

Respectfully yours,

John B. Simpson
