September 22, 2003 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor Greenwood and Campus Provost Simpson Re: Invitation from Chancellor and Campus ProvostDear Colleagues, This fall, UC Santa Cruz is inaugurating a significant new effort in support of student scholarships and graduate fellowships. The first annual Scholarships Benefit Dinner will be held on Saturday, October 11th. This event is part of the College Nine and College Ten dedication weekend celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students. The response from our foundation trustees, parents, and alumni has been fantastic, and we expect this event will sell out. While we still have a few remaining tables, we invite your participation in this exciting event. The Scholarships Benefit Dinner will be an excellent opportunity for you to support our undergraduate and graduate students while sharing a festive and meaningful event with community members, alumni, and distinguished guests. Thanks to several generous donations of both money and wine, the costs of the dinner have been underwritten, so the money that is raised by the dinner itself will go directly to support students. The dinner will be emceed by Kathy Sullivan (Cowell '73), Executive Director of the Center Of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio, and the first American woman to walk in space. In addition to student performances and recognition of outstanding student scholars, the evening will also honor UC President Emeritus Richard C. Atkinson with the presentation of the first UC Santa Cruz Foundation Medal. Tickets are $150 and you can designate 100% of the ticket cost in support of the scholarship or fellowship of your choice. Tables of ten are available for $1,500, and table hosts will receive recognition at the event. Perhaps some faculty or departments would like to sponsor a table together. Other sponsorship levels are available. Reservations can be made by contacting Kristin Palma at University Events (831-459-5075). Tickets are limited, so please don't delay in making your reservations. We look forward to joining with you and the entire UC Santa Cruz family as we support undergraduate and graduate student achievement and scholarship. Sincerely, M.R.C. Greenwood John B. Simpson
