Re: University Dining Services: message from Martin Chemers

I invite you to join me in recognizing a major campus transition. Thanks to the dedicated and creative effort of many individuals, UC Santa Cruz has a university-operated dining service, as of June 20.

An overview of the 15-month process is provided at two web sites, a Currents Online story (http://currents.ucsc.edu/03-04/06-14/dining.html) and in a message from the Colleges and University Housing Services (CUHS) (http://housing.ucsc.edu/housing/ds-self-op.htm)

Please join me in applauding the leadership and hard work of Vice Chancellor Francisco J. Hernandez, Associate Vice Chancellor Jean Marie Scott, Residential and Dining Services Director Alma Sifuentes, Business Support Services Director Sue Matthews, and University Dining Services Associate Director Scott Berlin. Together, they guided a complex effort involving numerous UCSC students, faculty, staff, plus community members and colleagues at other universities to realize this ambitious project.

To underscore the overall success of the effort, members of the University Dining Services transition team received an award for Excellence in Diversity bestowed by the Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Office and also were honored with an award presented at the Sustainability Awards Ceremony.

As well, let us recognize the effort and commitment of those who eagerly participated in the special training and campus orientation to prepare them for UC employment, a project that included key involvement by Staff Human Relations, the Title IX Office and other units.

Those among us who enjoyed the free "introductory" lunch on June 16 can attest to the achievement of our new University Dining Services. Again, I congratulate all of those involved.
