Re: National Day of Mourning

Out of respect for former President Ronald Reagan, President Bush and Governor Schwarzenegger have declared Friday, June 11, as a National Day of Mourning and Day of Mourning in California, respectively.

Although federal and State offices will close to mark the occasion, President Dynes has decided that the University of California will remain open. His decision is based on recognition of the difficulties inherent in closing at a time when most campuses are preparing for, or are in the midst of, final exams, commencements and other activities occurring at the close of the academic year.

Therefore, academic and administrative functions for UC Santa Cruz will continue as usual on Friday with the exception of the campus Mail Services Department. Because that department is an official substation of the U.S. Postal Service, it will be closed on Friday. However, the campus post office will extend its hours on Thursday, June 10, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

In accordance with UC guidelines, the Santa Cruz campus will observe the official period of mourning for a former president of the United States by lowering flags on UC Santa Cruz property to half-staff through July 5. In addition, I invite members of the campus community to recognize the historic significance of a president's passing by observing a moment of silence at Noon on Friday, June 11.
