May 27, 2004 To: Campus Community From: CATS Information Resource Center CATS email problems on 5/19-5/21Dear UCSC Account Holder, We are writing to you because you are a user of CATS central mail services. Our central mail servers experienced some problems with virus and spam scanning email messages which started approximately 5pm Wednesday, 5/19/04, and continued until 4pm Friday, 5/21/04. Approximately 3,000 random email messages, originating from both on and off campus, were lost due to this problem. Our central mail servers handle approximately 170,000 mail messages daily. If you were expecting important emails during this time frame and never received them, you should contact the sender and request that they resend those emails to you. If you sent email to an @ucsc.edu address during this time frame there is a possibility that it did not reach its destination, so if you have no evidence that it was received (such as a reply or other acknowledgement from the recipient), you should resend it. It's also possible that you did not receive campus-wide emails that were sent by Public Affairs during this time period – please check http://messages.ucsc.edu for these transmissions. Outages on our central mail server which result in mail loss are very rare, but we recognize that they are also very serious. We want to assure you that we're doing everything we can to prevent this type of service disruption. We understand that it can be very inconvenient and frustrating, so please accept our sincerest apologies. To report problems in the future with your UCSC account please send email to help@ucsc.edu, or you can submit an online request for help via the web at: http://www2.ucsc.edu/cats/sc/services/mail_consult.shtml
