Re: Important budget message from President Dynes and Acting Chancellor Chemers
I am writing to provide you with the earliest possible announcement of some important budget news.
Earlier this afternoon, I invited representative faculty, staff, students and administration to join me in a UCOP teleconference. The purpose was to announce agreement by UC President Dynes, CSU Chancellor Reed and Governor Schwarzenegger on a "compact" outlining their intentions for state funding levels and institutional accountability in the University of California and California State University systems over the next several years.
The new agreement provides that the Governor will not propose additional cuts for 2004 - 05 beyond what we are already planning, and it lays the foundation for budget improvements beginning in 2005 - 06. The compact will require annual support by the California Legislature, which will be asked to include compact funding in its annual budget.
