March 31, 2004 To: Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: Farewell message from Chancellor GreenwoodDear Friends and Colleagues, On this last day as your Chancellor, I want to reiterate how proud and honored I am to have worked with you. Together, we have advanced this remarkable campus and have established -- both for ourselves and for others -- a wider appreciation for the excellence that characterizes UC Santa Cruz. Evidence of your achievement is everywhere -- in the world-changing scholarship of faculty and students; in the expansion of leading-edge curricula; in the ways our alumni help build a better society; in the stewardship of a unique natural environment; in the addition of stunning new facilities; and in the plans we have developed for the future. Tomorrow, when I assume responsibilities as the University of California's Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, I will join President Dynes' leadership team during a most challenging time for UC and for higher education generally. I will have challenges that are diverse, engaging, and critical for the future. I am committed to do my best to advance the promise of the University, just as I have worked to guide UC Santa Cruz toward its highest aspirations. To underscore that UC Santa Cruz is unmistakably on the move and making a difference, let me share an excerpt from the initial report of the WASC review team, led by Dr. James Duderstadt, President Emeritus of the University of Michigan. Noting that "UCSC has long served as a role model for American higher education," the WASC team offered strong encouragement for the future. "The brief history of UCSC has been characterized by extraordinary innovation, driven both by the vision of its founders and its capacity to attract energetic, creative faculty, students, staff, and administrative leaders seeking such a pioneering spirit. This may, in fact, be the university's strongest asset as it faces an increasingly uncertain future, since institutions characterized by innovation and flexibility, based upon enduring traditions and values, seem best able to transform challenge into opportunity during a period of rapid change. We believe that UCSC is remarkably well positioned not simply to adapt to this future with its fundamental values and character intact, but to shape its further evolution into a leading research university …" I have no doubt that UC Santa Cruz will continue on its upward trajectory, with the same intensity and innovation that has propelled the campus to its present distinction. As well, I am certain that our colleague Martin M. Chemers will be an excellent Acting Chancellor. He is a proven leader and a dedicated and enthusiastic champion of UC Santa Cruz. Please join me in supporting him and his leadership team. In closing, let me thank you again for your good wishes and many gestures of support. Your friendship and kindness have meant the world to me and my family. Although I have been tapped to serve you and the rest of our University in a different capacity, I will never forget you and the wonderful experiences we have shared. With warm regards, M.R.C.
