January 6, 2004 To: The Campus Community From: Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood Re: Automobile-related accidents claim life of one employee, seriously injure anotherIt is with great sadness that I write to inform you of two automobile-related accidents involving UCSC people over the winter break. The first tragically claimed the life of Robert Becker, an associate specialist in the Earth Sciences Department for the past ten months. Robert managed the Stable Isotope Laboratory used by faculty, researchers, and students from several science departments. He died in a car accident while traveling outside the Santa Cruz area. (See http://currents.ucsc.edu/03-04/01-05/inmemoriam.html) The second seriously injured UCSC's assistant chief of police, Robert Jones, who was struck by a car while riding his bicycle on Highway 1 near Davenport. Robert remains in critical condition at a San Jose hospital. Friends and coworkers who wish to help may donate blood in his name or send cards via our Police Department. (See http://currents.ucsc.edu/03-04/01-05/jones.html) Please join me in expressing condolences to Robert Becker's family and our hopes and best wishes to Robert Jones and his family.
